Mark-Whit
A painter focusing predominantly in landscape using oil paint and mixed media. My main interest is light and atmosphere and how these factors can change even the most familiar of landscapes – landscapes that bear witness to our past, present and future.
Using sketches, photographs and memories, paintings are mainly created in the studio, some taking many months to complete.
The initial subject is sketched in quite boldly and then worked upon over and over again using thin washes to create ethereal images, some unrecognizable from the initial starting point.
Although my work is based on real landscapes, it is not a likeness which I am attempting to capture but a feel for that particular place. In this way the paintings evolve over a period
of time just as the landscape itself is constantly evolving.
Most of my work is based in Shropshire, Staffordshire and the West Midlands.
