From the Chair of the Wolverhampton Society of Artists Carol Widenbar.
The Centenary Exhibition is now well and truly underway and has been extremely well received by all who have attended so far. If you haven’t visited the Wolverhampton Art Gallery yet then I can heartily recommend that you do. The Exhibition closes on 16th February 2020 so there is time.
There are of course many people who have played a significant role in bringing this event to fruition but in particular I wish to extend my own personal thank you to our Exhibition Secretary Julia Timmins who organised this marvellous Centenary Exhibition. It is a wonderful achievement in the history of the Society and truly reflects the tremendous history and quality of art delivered over those years. On behalf of the membership I feel that we all owe Julia a great debt of gratitude for her tremendous insight and the many months of hard work she has invested to make all of this happen. Julia has given us many years of outstanding and impeccable service.
As many of you may be aware this is Julia’s last exhibition and we shall certainly miss the strength of her dedication and commitment. On behalf of the Society I wish you well for the future Julia and look forward to seeing your beautiful art work displayed in places far and wide. My sincere thanks too for all the support you have provided to me as Chair during my tenure in office.
Many thanks must also go to Brendan Flynn for his invaluable help with the organisation of the Alumni and Contemporary Rooms and for co-writing the History of the WSA 1919-2019 Centenary Book along with our President Keith Oram. Thanks must also go to Roma Piotrowska who curated the exhibition.
The exhibition documents the story of the Wolverhampton Society of Artists and features a selection of works by WSA’s alumni including paintings, drawings and sculptures and also showcases contextual works highlighting the history and achievements of the WSA against the wider development of British art in the period 1919-1929. The final section showcases works by current members of the Society.
